General access within the zoo.

Exmoor zoo is on a gentle slope. It is positioned on the side of a south west facing valley. The average gradient is 1 in 12, although two short steep slopes (1 in 5) are to be found in the grounds. At least 65% of all paths are laid to tarmac for ease of wheelchair and push chair access and level paths exist between the gentle slopes. All other paths are laid to scree. The paths turn to scree at the lower section of the zoo furthest away from the entrance and the use of manual wheelchairs in this area is not advisable. These paths can be adequately accessed by electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters.  The steepest incline is at the initial animal enclosures (1-2) as you enter the zoo. It is advised to have your scooter on a low speed and check your brakes on a manual wheel chair before attempting this small incline. As an alternative you can enter the zoo through the cafeteria (turn right instead of left for the zoo trail) and explore the trail in revesre (entering near enclosure 46)!

Mobility scooter hire

We have three scooters to hire each with a weight limit, they can be hired from the zoo at £5 for the day and a deposit of £20 returnable as long as no damage to scooter. A competence form must be filled before entering zoo, involving instructions on use and your signature agreeing you have been shown  how to drive. Our scooters become very popular in the height of season so we suggest ringing and reserving over the phone with our reception team tel: 01598 763352 and press option1.

Carers and concession information

We offer a concession adult and child ticket which can only be purchased at the zoo at reception.

Guests in wheelchairs can use the concession ticket (£16.95 adult & £13.45 child - main season 2024) and their accompanying carer will receive ½ price admission (£9.50 as of 09.02.24 main season).

To qualify as an accompanying carer you will need a disability living allowance letter, a PIP document or a disabled badge for the concession ticket user.

Assistance dogs

We only allow assistance dogs into the zoo. We recognise the valuable role of emotional support dogs or animals can play in providing support to their owners, but we do not allow emotional support animals access to our site.

For assistance dogs we have put together the following information to ensure the safety of yourself, your dog, our animals and members of the public during your visit. SEE attachment.

We recommend that you read this information before you visit the zoo as you may be required to provide additional details on arrival. We will also ask you to complete and sign a declaration form before entering the zoo at reception.

Accessibility toilet.

The location of our easy access toilet is immediately on the right once you enter the zoo (opposite the squirrel monkeys - enclosure 1). It also contains a pull-down nappy changer (not suitable for children over 10kg).

Easy access parking

The zoo does provide an easy access parking bay of three spaces which are on the left in the main car park next to reception. During busy periods if these spaces are full, arrangements can also be made to find alternative closer parking. Please pull up at the admission building and ask at reception for us to help. Of course, you can always drop-off and pick-up at the reception if this is suitable.
